Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Local folklore, comprising traditional stories, myths, and legends, serves as a vital repository of cultural heritage and identity. In Gamawa Local Government Area, Bauchi State, folklore reflects the community’s values, history, and worldview. However, the oral nature of folklore makes it susceptible to loss, particularly in an era of rapid modernization. Photography, as a medium of visual storytelling, offers a unique opportunity to preserve and represent local folklore by capturing its performances, symbols, and contexts. According to Adamu and Suleiman (2024), photographs can serve as a bridge between oral traditions and modern audiences, ensuring the continuity of cultural narratives. By documenting the visual elements of folklore, such as costumes, settings, and expressions, photography can enhance its accessibility and appreciation. This study explores the role of photography in representing local folklore in Gamawa, focusing on its potential to preserve cultural heritage and promote community identity.
